Britain’s Worst Hour

April 14, 2009

When I was out yesterday I saw a very intriguing headline on the National Post (one of our national newspapers) called ‘Britain’s Worst Hour’. I got a chance to read it this morning and I found it very interesting. In short it is about the current lack of morality amongst the younger generation and the social devastation/chaos it is causing.

Several of my thoughts:

  • God has actually given me a real heart for Great Britain (I expect that I will be doing a lot of ministry there and in Europe in years to come) and we need to be praying for them.
  • It is interesting because what is happening in Britain is simply an effect of moral relativism (there are no absolutes) and a belief that a culture does not need faith/God. If we stay on our current path in North America we will see the same kind of results (talk to anyone who works with youth and they will tell you some mind-blowing stories of what is ‘normal’ now)
  • The answer for Great Britain (and really all of us) is the gospel – the good news about Jesus and what he did for us. That is what can bring true change.
  • I remember reading that in John Wesley’s day that the social conditions in Britain were horrendous but it was actually the breeding ground for the Great Awakening which impacted every facet of society (mass conversions, abolishment of the slave trade, social justice).
  • I believe that we are getting close to a fresh ‘Great Awakening’ that is going to do the same!

  1. You’re not wrong about the UK. On the John Wesley thing – he gets the credit for the UK not having a civil war like a lot of other European countries around that time.
