Pro-Life (Part 3): McLean’s Magazine – It’s Time to Talk About Abortion
July 18, 2008Today one of our church members sent me a link to a recent MacLean’s Magazine article titled “It’s Time to Talk About Abortion”. In it, the author questions why Canada has no laws regarding abortion (absolutely none), why in a ‘democracy’ there is such a ‘forced silence’ regarding this issue, and why our government is doing nothing about it.
He points clearly to the furor over Henry Morgentaler, the ‘Father’ of abortion in Canada, receiving the Order of Canada as clear evidence that there are many Canadians who do not agree with abortion and yet it is treated in our media, our Universities and Government as if it is a settled issue. He lists a number of examples of blatant discrimination against the Pro-Life cause (Universities banning Pro-Life Groups, Pro-Life billboards being rejected by advertisers etc.) and asks “whatever your view on abortion: is this how we treat dissent, in a democracy?” (I’m also reminded about how CBC recently did a facebook poll to ask young Canadians what their ‘wish for Canada’ was – the ending of Abortion was tops)
To truly grasp what a breakthrough this article is, you would have to understand the incredible bias against the Pro-Life cause in the media in Canada. Pro-Life events are rarely reported. If they are the Pro-Life cause is almost always portrayed as being made up of right-wing ideologues bent on enslaving women and destroying our country. For example, recently 1000 people gathered to protest the award for Dr. Morgentaler in Ottawa. It was not reported by any major media source. A small group gathered to show their support elsewhere and it was widely reported. To have a major Canadian news source publishing a common-sense article like this is outstanding.
I’m excited about what God is doing in our nation on a number of fronts – and the Pro-Life cause is definitely one of them.
