Behind the Scenes With Bishop Johnson (2 of 5)

June 25, 2008

This week I’ve been sharing a bit about some of the ‘behind the scenes’ comments and insights of the time I had with Bishop Flynn Johnson when he was ministering at our church last weekend.

Setting Faith Goals

At Atlanta Metropolitan Cathedral they conduct Encounter Weekends (a lot of what we do at CWL we learned from them). As part of their preparation he sets faith goals for each of his team of 12 as to how many men they will bring to be part of the weekend. He also has a personal goal that he takes on for himself.

Several things that stand out to me about this:

  • I love the concept of goals – they can be hard at first because they can cause you to feel pressure but without them what are we believing for and working towards?
  • If you really study out faith you see that walking by faith involves having goals. The foundation of faith is believing in God but it also involves believing for something. Without a goal you are not believing therefore you are not in faith. Having a goal stretches your faith.
  • I really respect the fact that Bishop Johnson has a goal for himself. As the head leader it can be easy to ask others to do things that you are not doing yourself. I love how he is ‘leading from the front’.
  • I realized in my life that I need to begin working more with goals. I’m setting a goal for myself to bring men to our encounter. I want to push past the intimidation to set goals for reaching out to others in my everyday life.
