Great Quote: Being ‘Real’ in the Church

May 30, 2008

“To me, the church should not aim to be ‘real’ as an end. The church is there to proclaim truth. Trying to be hip and cool and real does a disservice to the church. We’re not called to be successful. We’re called to be obedient, even if they don’t come…. If somebody doesn’t find you objectionable, I wonder if you’re preaching the full counsel of God.” – James Gilmore (Source)

  1. I am trying to wrap my head around this to comment.I am kind of getting what I wrote in an earlier post.Traditional church only on a different level.Either way I do not think you can do the word justice, again it sounds like a way to please the people, the idea is to please God.Seek ye the kingdom first. As I wrote before, preach the word as it is written and the people will come. The last line in this post is right on the money. If someone doesn’t find you objectionable you don’t have to wonder. Some people have given their lives because they preached the UNCOMPROMISED word.Try and find any one of the great leaders of the past that did not go through some kind of persecution, and it is still happening today.

  2. I agree with your thought on this, however, is it important to be at all relevant to the culture of the day? love your blog.

  3. “If somebody doesn’t find you objectionable, I wonder if you’re preaching the full counsel of God.”

i wonder about this. when i look at Jesus in the gospels, i see a message of peace and redemption, and ultimately of love. who found this objectionable? i don’t see your everyday “joe” getting upset at Jesus. the people i see objecting to Jesus are the pompous religious leaders that were blind and deaf.

i think that if we truly lived as Jesus called us to live, then people wouldn’t find that very objectionable.

    thoughts?!

  4. Who crucified Jesus? Why does a philosophy student face problems with her grades when she won’t deny her Christian faith? Why does the government give funds to a planned parenthood organization that believes in some cases abortion is an option? Why is it that some folks now say seasons greetings, instead of Merry Christmas? Why do some organizations want religious monuments taken down simple because they can’t put one up?Why are the schools able to teach about gay relationships, abortion, sex education, etc? Why is it okay to have same sex couples on secular television search for a house to live in together?I could just keep going. I pray for all the things, individuals and organizations that have strayed from the word. And I do not judge because as you judge so you will be judged.Lets turn this around. You talk about preaching and having people find what you are doing objectionable.I believe there needs to be more people standing up saying what is going on around them is objectionable. What does “politically correct”mean anyway?
