Great Quote: Father Theodore Hesburgh

March 20, 2008

One of the ‘up and coming’ men of God in our church, Karl Bruce, sent me this amazing quote from Father Theodore Hesburgh.

“The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.”

This quote speaks to me on so many levels – more and more I’m coming to see how vital the clear communication of vision is to servant-leadership.

I was reflecting on this earlier today and I jotted down three areas that I’m focusing on ‘blowing a certain trumpet’:

  1. Clearly outlining our mission/vision for allĀ
  2. Consistently and regularly communicating this mission/vision
  3. Sharing the stories of how the mission/vision is working

  1. Great stuff Brendan… #3 Celebrating when the vision is working is such an important one and I think we too often forget to do that.

  2. That is so true! It can be applied on so many levels. This quote also brings to mind the importance of ferver in the delivery of The Good News. The bugler sets the tone and relays instructions from officers to soldiers during battle. He blows like his life depended on it – because it does. His and everyone elses on the field. Blowing an ‘uncertain trumpet’ can literally cost lives. Wow!

    Thanks for everything PB.

    Karl
